    Tramps Like Us: A Novel

    by Joe Westmoreland

When: 3 PM on the last Wednesday of each month

Where: We meet via Zoom.  Login information will be included in your registration confirmation email.

About the book: From the Amazon description...

Abused by his father and stifled by closeted life as a teenager in Kansas City, Joe, the wide-eyed narrator of Tramps Like Us, graduates from high school in 1974 and hits the road hitchhiking. But it isn't until he reunites with Ali, his hometown's other queer outcast, that Joe finds a partner in crime. When the two of them finally wash up in New Orleans, they discover a hedonistic paradise of sex, drugs, and music, a world that only expands when they move to San Francisco in 1979.

Told with openhearted frankness, Joe Westmoreland's Tramps Like Us is an exuberantly soulful adventure of self-discovery and belonging, set across a consequential American decade. In New Orleans and San Francisco, and on the roads in between, Joe and Ali find communities of misfits to call their own. The days and nights blur, a blend of LSD and heroin, new wave and disco, orgies and friends, and the thrilling spontaneity of youth—all of which is threatened the moment Joe, Ali, and seemingly everyone around them are diagnosed with HIV. But miraculously, the stories survive. As Eileen Myles writes, "I love this book most of all because it is so mortal."

Tramps Like Us is an ode to a nearly lost generation, an autofictional chronicle of America between gay liberation and the AIDS crisis, and an evergreen testament to the force of friendship.

Music Director Nathalie Stutzmann leads an unforgettable season debut, opening with the iconic Fanfare for the Common Man, music so poignant, so gripping—so quintessentially American—it colors significant moments in our lives, from Olympic events to memorials. However when parking in that area be advised that occasionally cars are ticketed right after 10PM in the neighborhood to the east of the Arts Center. Some members elect to continue to park there and take that risk. Paid parking is also available in the arts center garage, or in any of several other garages in the area such as the Promenade. It was history-making then, and still is today.

With more than four decades of service, the AGMC remains committed to its mission:  to inspire dialogue and drive social equity through artistic excellence. Regardless of race, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, sex characteristics, or disabilities, the AGMC welcomes those dedicated to presenting exceptional musical experiences for both its audiences and its members, fostering inclusion and equality for all people.

Chorus founder Jeffrey McIntyre and long time assistant conductor David Artadi-Beno will lead us in a conversation about the history and mission of the chorus and we'll hear a performance from Panache, the small ensemble from the AGMC.

    Miss Memory Lane: A Memoir

    by Colton Hayes

When: 3 PM on the last Wednesday of each month

Where: We meet via Zoom.  Login information will be included in your registration confirmation email.

About the book: From the Amazon description...

In 2018, Colton Haynes woke up in a hospital. He’d had two seizures, lost vision in one eye, almost ruptured a kidney, and been put on an involuntary psychiatric hold. Not yet thirty, he knew he had to take stock of his life and make some serious changes if he wanted to see his next birthday.

As he worked towards sobriety, Haynes allowed himself to become vulnerable for the first time and discovered profound self-awareness. He had millions of social media followers who constantly told him they loved him. But what would they think if they knew his true story? If they knew where he came from and the things he had done?

Now, Colton bravely pulls back the curtain on his life and career, revealing the incredible highs and devastating lows. From his unorthodox childhood in a small Kansas town, to coming to terms with his sexuality, he keeps nothing back.

By sixteen, he had been signed by the world’s top modeling agency and his face appeared on billboards. But he was still a broke, lonely, confused teenager, surrounded by people telling him he could be a star as long as he never let anyone see his true self. As Colton’s career in television took off, the stress of wearing so many masks and trying to please so many different people turned his use of drugs and alcohol into full-blown addiction.
