Event Details: Join your fellow APT members for a merry old time at the Shakespeare Tavern & Playhouse for a production of The Taming of the Shrew.

For the people of Shakespeare's Globe, poetry was a living entity brought into existence through the active relationship of actor, audience, and playwright. Each production is staged so a modern audience experiences the play in a manner consistent with its creator's original intent. ASC productions feature hand-made period costumes, all live music and sound effects, thrilling sword fights, and abundant "direct address" to the audience, all of which is orchestrated to ensure that the passion and poetry of Shakespeare's genius remains at the heart of the theatrical experience.

Thursday night performances, of which this is one, are open seating on a first-come, first-served basis. A member of the APT Board will arrive at 5:45 p.m. when the Box Office opens to secure our place in line. Members should plan on arriving at 6:15 p.m. when the doors open so we can go in and select our seats as a group. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. and end at approximately 10:00 p.m.

Food and beverage is available for purchase prior to the show (from 6:15 p.m. - 7:20 p.m.) and dessert and beverage is available during the intermission. Click here to see current food and beverage options.

Cost: $25 for the performance; food and beverage purchases are on your own.

Please bring $25 cash or a cheque made out to Atlanta Prime Timers the evening of the event. If you register for this event and do not show up or cancel by August 2nd, you will be obligated to pay the $25 admission fee.

Parking: MARTA is a convenient way to get to The Shakespeare Tavern. Exit at The Civic Center Station and walk north to the theatre.

Paid parking is available at the Emory University Hospital Midtown Parking Deck (550 Peachtree Street), which is across the street from the theatre. Do NOT park on Pine Street or in the empty parking lots on Pine Street. Your car might be booted if you park in these lots. Also, do not park at the meters in front of the theatre.

Midtown Bowl charges an hourly rate of $40.00 per lane but we get the reduced league rate. So, we can all enjoy a cost-effective fun time bowling. The APT Host pays for the lane on his credit card, and you reimburse with cash or most electronic payment apps. Bowling shoe rental is now just $4.00 + tax and must be paid via a credit card.

Event Details: Join APT for a docent-led tour of the Absence of Humanity: The Holocaust Years, 1933-1945 exhibition at the Breman Museum. This permanent exhibition presents a detailed history of the events that led up to the Holocaust, the atrocities perpetrated by the Nazis during World War II, and those events that took place in its wake. In this highly informative Holocaust museum exhibition, the narrative of this dark time in human history is put forth in the voices of those who survived and made new lives in Atlanta.

Absence of Humanity: The Holocaust Years, 1933-1945 was designed by local architect and Holocaust survivor Ben Hirsch, and features historic photographs, personal memorabilia, family documents, and videotaped interviews with Atlanta-area survivors.

Cost: $7 (under 65), $5 (65 and above) payable at the Breman Museum.

Reservations: Required. This event is limited to 15 attendees.

Parking: The museum is located inside the Selig Center on the northwest corner of 18th and Spring Street. While they have a Spring Street address, the gated entrance to the museum is located on 18th Street.

Limited free parking (including handicap parking) is avaiable in front of the museum and inside the gated lot.

Event Details: Will Johnston, Founder and Executive Director of the MicroLife Institute, is a nationally recognized leader in the micro-living movement. With a passion for rethinking housing, Will has guided MircoLife in advancing policy change, building award-winning demonstration projects like the Cottages on Vaughan, and inspiring communities to embrace smaller, more sustainable living. A graduate of the University of Georgia with a Masters in Community Development, Will also brings leadership experience from programs such as LEAD Atlanta, ULI Atlanta’s Center for Leadership, and the Regional Leadership Institute. Known for his engaging storytelling and visionary outlook, Will challenges people to “think outside the box by putting people in one,” highlighting the power of micro-structures to create more affordable, connected, and resilient communities.

His talk on "Downsizing Your Way to Happiness" explores the ideas that downsizing isn’t about giving something up. It’s about making space for a life that fits better. Using MicroLife principles, we’ll look at how smaller, more intentional living can create greater freedom, connection, and joy, especially for those who have spent a lifetime defining home on their own terms.

For many in the LGBTQ+ community, home has always been more than just a place. It has been a reflection of identity, resilience, and chosen family. This conversation invites a fresh perspective on how to carry that meaning forward into the next chapter by letting go of what no longer serves you and designing flexibility, deeper connection, and a lifestyle that feels aligned, liberating, and genuinely fulfilling.

Event Details: When Margaret “Peggy” Mitchell lived in the building with her second husband, John Marsh, they lived in a small apartment on the first floor. Mitchell nicknamed apartment no. 1 “The Dump.”

Shortly after moving into the apartment in 1925, Mitchell quit her job as a reporter at the Atlanta Journal, primarily because of a re-aggravation of a foot injury she suffered as a child. While recuperating, she would plow through library books that Marsh would bring her. As the story goes, one day he came home from the library empty-handed, claiming that she had read all the library’s works of fiction, and suggested that she start writing something instead. Mitchell’s first and only book was born: Gone With the Wind.

Both beloved and condemned from almost the moment of its publication, Gone With the Wind went on to shape the way that millions of people imagined the American Civil War for decades to come. Both the book and the movie depict a rosy myth of the Old South, casting the institution of slavery in a benevolent light. African Americans characters are also characterized as simple-minded and beholden to the white characters, most of whom are slaveholders (or, by the end of the story, former slaveholders). Overall, the story also ignores the role of slavery in causing the Civil War, playing into Lost Cause mythology, among many other issues. These depictions are, however, hugely influential, and provide a case study of how narrative, art, and film can affect our view of history.

Explore the complex issues raised by Gone With the Wind and by Mitchell’s life as well as the popularity along with criticism of the book and film.
